Creating a character in a game like Mortal Reins can be a daunting task. As an adventurer, you know that a well-crafted character can make or break a game. In Part One, we will focus on the storytelling and statistics that go into creating a character that will truly stand out in the game. Get ready to embark on an exciting journey as we share our tips and tricks for crafting a character that will leave a lasting impression in Mortal Reins.

Basics of Character Creation

Character creation in Mortal Reins is a multi-faceted process that involves both narrative elements and numerical statistics and skills. Whether you choose to start with a concept for your character or with the stats, the goal is to create a character that aligns with your desired playstyle and brings your gaming experience to life.

Let's take Thomas as an example. He knew from the start that he wanted to play as an assassin, so he began by choosing his race - a skeox ratperson - and profession - a thief. These choices were based on his desired narrative concept. By starting with the narrative elements, Thomas was able to shape his character's appearance, abilities, and motivations in a way that fit his desired role.

On the other hand, you can also start with the numerical statistics and skills and build the narrative elements around them. For example, you may choose to prioritize certain stats like intelligence and dexterity for a smart and stealthy character, and then develop a backstory and personality traits that align with those abilities.

Regardless of where you start, the key is to ensure that your character's narrative elements and stats complement each other and create a cohesive and engaging character. By carefully considering both aspects of character creation, you can create a memorable character in Mortal Reins that reflects your playstyle and immerses you in the game world.

Narrative Elements

When creating a character in Mortal Reins, the narrative elements are what bring them to life and drive their story forward. Motivation and conflicts are essential in shaping your character's journey. Thomas' character belongs to a family of assassins who have fallen out of favor. His ultimate goal is to pull off a significant assassination that will put his family back on the map. However, their current reputation stands in his way. Nobody wants to work with him, creating conflict and obstacles for Thomas to overcome.

Choosing the right race and profession also plays a significant role in your character's narrative. For Thomas, selecting the Skeox race and the thief profession aligns with his desired narrative goals. The Skeox race grants additional points in Dexterity and penalties to Empathy, while their short lives and large colonies add pressure for him to succeed quickly.

These narrative choices shape the skills and specialties that come most easily to your character. Thomas can easily level up stealth and deceit-based skills as a thief, supporting his role as an assassin.

By carefully considering the narrative elements of your character, you can create a rich and engaging story that immerses you in the world of Mortal Reins. Stay tuned for part two, where we will dive deeper into character customization, progression, and more.

Stats and Bonuses

Stats and bonuses are crucial aspects of character creation in Mortal Reins. They determine what your character is capable of and play a significant role in shaping your gameplay experience. There are four main stats to consider: Strength, Intelligence, Dexterity, and Empathy.

To determine your character's stats, you have a few options. You can roll them randomly, use the standard array method, or roll them and allocate the numbers as you choose.

If you choose to roll your stats, start with three 10-sided dice. Roll all three and choose the highest number. For example, let's say you roll an 8. Subtract two from that number, and you have the value for your core stat, which in this case is 6. Repeat this process three more times, using the same dice. If you ever roll a set of dice where the highest number is three or lower, ignore all three dice and reroll. This ensures that the lowest possible stat you can get from rolling is a 2, while the highest is 8.

Once you have your rolls, you can choose to immediately assign them to your character's stat blocks or jot them down on the side for later to distribute the numbers between the core stats as you see fit. After assigning all the stats, subtract another 5 from each one to determine your stat bonus. This bonus will range between +3 and -3.

Alternatively, you can opt for the standard array of stats if game balance is your goal. The standard array consists of the numbers 8, 7, 6, and 4, with corresponding bonuses of +3, +2, +1, and -1.

Keep in mind that race and profession choices can also modify your character's stats further, but we'll explore that in more detail in part two. By carefully considering your character's stats and bonuses, you can create a well-rounded and capable character that aligns with your desired playstyle.
