Nuterra is based on late 300-600AD Europe, both in visual design and in the regional state of affairs. Plagued by war, famine, illness, and revolt, Nuterra has seen the rise and fall of races and empires alike. Of course, reality never had to account for the effects of magic, and so we’ll start from the beginning and make our way up to the crisis of current day.
As on earth, the beginnings of Nuterran history are vague and poorly documented. It is believed though that the world as it’s known now was created by the collision of three primordial beings: The Great Star Bird, who scattered stars as it flew, The Great Earth Turtle, whose crumbling shell shed the earth beneath our feet, and the Fungus, who gave life to all things between the ground and sky. The Great Star Bird’s wings burned away in the collision, leaving behind only a single feather. From this feather the first gods were born. In time more gods came to be, each representing something new. Magic, Chaos, air, and fire.
With air and fire came the first creatures of the earth, and the birth of the mortal races. The gods soon found power in the faith of mortals, and bestowed gifts upon them, creating heroes and growing their influence. The inspiration that the heroes instilled in mortals, however, gave rise to yet more gods, and in time a war broke out among the deities. The warring gods created more and more minor deities to help them fight, and races to worship those deities, until there was no longer enough magic to sustain them all. The gods’ power to change the world weakened, and gave way to the first age of Mortals.
5000 years before the Empire was the Age of Myth and Bronze. This era saw the discovery of metal tools, and with it the rise of the earliest civilizations, built along fertile riverbanks and coasts. Mortals developed a system of writing over the years, and the first books were written. The spread of knowledge allowed for the refinement of magic. The wizards and sorcerers overthrew the priest-kings who had previously ruled. Without the aid of the gods, however, they struggled to understand the power they welded, leading to the First Collapse. Many civilizations fell to chaos, famine, and revolt. Many others from a mysterious sea-people.
The Aelimfor were the first to recover from the collapse. The Aelim, or Elves were the descendants of gods who fled to the earth to escape the war of the gods. Their long lives and memory of time before the First Collapse allowed them to rebuild their civilizations quickly, and soon united the lands under the banner of Elenar; a warrior, prophet, and king. Unfortunately with his passing King Elenar's territories were divided among his heirs, who isolated from their people and favored the elves over other races, leading to rebellion.
Man were the first to rise up, killing YIunor of Elenar, who claimed to be the true heir to Elenar’s throne. In time, the Aurk, Dwafor, and Xoglio rose up as well. With divided fronts for the Aelimfor and squabbling between the kings of younger races, the land fell into a state of constant strife until a plague, The Scouring, wiped out populations to the East and South of the Middle Sea.
With other civilizations weakened, the city-state of Scorb was able to unite the lands surrounding it, beginning with the destruction of Tymeria. Already an economic power prior to the Scouring, the Scorbian republic built trade ships, expanded its borders, and thrived for decades until civil unrest and economic decline threatened it’s people. When eventually the republic fell, Marcus Tabius established the Scorbosi Empire.
The world entered a new golden Era under the rule of the Emperor, regarded by his people as both god and king. Other nations and races fell, being integrated into the empire’s expanding borders until only the Kingdom of Haliahra could hope to stand against it, as many of the high elves had retreated to the safety of the Echo Isles.
This brings us to current day, 584 years past the founding of the empire. Corruption runs rampant, as emperors become increasingly concerned with their own power and influence. Generals and their armies are rebelling and splintering off to conquer their own land, and barbarian tribes are pushing ever deeper within the empire’s borders, wreaking havoc along their path. Haliahran slaves and Elves threaten war, and plague rips through the land.
