The equipment section of Mortal Reins includes everything one might expect from similar ttrpgs, such as weapons and armor, and then adds a little bit more. Held items, modifiers, vehicles, and even the price of labor can be found within its pages.
Each weapon is sorted into simple groups of similar items and listed with relevant stats such as the damage it deals and its structural integrity, as well as any skill requirements needed to wield it. Armor in Mortal Reins provides a damage reduction instead of the character’s dodge value, so you always know whether you missed or whether the character was hit but the armor protected them. Armor can be layered and acquired piece by piece for different body parts – unlike other systems the dual dice roll allows us to get more information into a single action without having to look up many tables, so each action is a plot interaction, rather than an abstract number. Heavy armor needs to have a character be proficient in it to wear it, otherwise it affects your resting.
Players may also choose to carry or wear minor items for bonuses to certain skills. A held crystal could add to a character’s mysticism, while a worn trophy may add to a character’s ability to intimidate others. Each of these items may also take on modifiers to improve or weaken their abilities in exchange for increases or decreases in their costs, respectively.
Not confined to readymade items, the equipment chapter also offers information on the building of vehicles, such as gliders and chariots, as well as suggestions on how to price labor based on skill and building materials. This wealth of information not only allows players to select from the book’s pre-made equipment, but also offers a framework for adventurers to create their own.
